The Canal

A great morning for birding at the the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center Observation Tower and Trails. Stayed in the area (Gamboa) about an hour longer than anticipated as there was maintenance on a bridge that was the only way back. Had a picnic lunch and then a quick visit to the Summit Zoo which really is a beautiful botanical garden with a few native animal exhibits, including ones for the Baird's tapir and another for Harpy Eagle. I believe the Miami Zoo and the Houston Zoo have helped the Zoo, but much more needs to be done. The potential is huge! Ended our tour with a visit to the MiraFlores Locks of the Canal. Great interpretive museum. Until one sees the canal first-hand (second set of locks opened two years ago to accommodate larger ships), it is hard to appreciate this incredible accomplishment.
